The barbarity of enslavement endured by Hardy, Mary, and millions more, included being denied the opportunity to learn to read and write, a fundamental life skill. Despite their lack of formal education, they were able to thrive beyond the clutches of slavery.
To honor their perseverance, we present the second annual Hardy and Mary Bearden Shelton 1874 Academic Scholarship. Our academic scholarship is more than just a financial award, it's an opportunity to recognize and support those who have persevered and are committed to making a positive impact on their communities. We believe education is a powerful tool and that everyone deserves the chance to develop their knowledge and potential. Education can change not just one's life but the world around them.
